So, Dr. Summers, I guess that's the reason why, when patients come to me they ask me about Stemulite, a supplement that can actually help them burn fat, build lean muscle mass, get stronger, recover faster—that it's really the stem cells that play a major role.

Well they play the primary role. There are several other factors that help that role. But the body has a very large number of hibernating stem cells and they can be awakened under various stress conditions. They will then participate in regeneration. Repair of damaged tissue, even replacing old cells with new cells and rejuvenating the body—and the appearance.

Now, when you talk about the cells "waking up", I have a decent back ground in stem cell research. Talk about the migration of the stem cells moving toward the problem areas.

Well they are in a synomal state until something comes along to awaken them—we just talked about that. But how they know where to go is the real interesting concept. The body will release certain signals from the cells that are in distress or in a state of dysfunction; and these are chemicals that actually tell the stem cells where to go. They go into circulation and they follow the path called the chemotactic signal and once they get there they stop. So the cell population that they are in, the next time they divide or differentiate, they take on the characteristics of that cell. It's a marvelous, marvelous process that the body has.

Very interesting. So your saying that when cells start to break down, get overworked, tired; they lose energy, production potential—maybe cartilage cells start to break down, these stem cells come to the rescue.

They absolutely do. We didn't know that twenty years ago. We didn't know that much about stem cells. But now we know that things like arthritic knees – the condriacites, or the fascia that is around the bones and joints can regenerate and the cells that regenerate them are called condriacites. They actually can increase the number in the population and an old joint that has been traumatized or damaged through the years can put on a new coating, a new protection. And the actual arthritis can go away. There's some good studies on that, by the way.

Yeah, and when you talk about combating all these chronic diseases – I mean, osteoarthritis is one of the major chronic diseases – this is monumental for individuals like the baby boomers or the individuals that may have that mindset where they have the right motivation but physically they tend to overwork themselves.

It takes Mother Nature a little longer than, say, a knee replacement. But it will work over the course of time and the body will actually repair those kinds of conditions.
